Can Toddlers Really Do Yoga?

Hi !

One of the most common things I hear from parents and teachers is:

“Can toddlers really do yoga?”
or
“They are always moving… how can they relax?”

And honestly, that is exactly where toddler yoga begins.

Not with perfect poses.
Not with silent sitting.
Not with expecting them to stay still on the mat for long.

At the toddler age, children learn through movement, imitation, rhythm and play.

So before we expect younger children to be still, we first allow them to move.

In our recent toddler yoga class, we explored simple yoga through movement, imagination and play — raising arms like the sun, stretching like animals, balancing like little trees, resting like turtles and coming back to calm in small steps.

And this is where the real learning happens.

When toddlers move, copy, balance, listen and follow simple cues, they are slowly building:

🌿 body awareness
🌿 coordination
🌿 confidence
🌿 listening skills
🌿 focus
🌿 early self-regulation
🌿 connection with the group

On the outside, it may look like simple movement. But at a developmental level, they are learning how to follow rhythm, understand space, regulate energy, and return to calm after movement.

This is why in toddler yoga, we don’t force stillness.

We create a path towards stillness.

First Regulation with movement
Then engagement with imagination.
Then safety with repetition.
Then pause.
Then rest.

Because younger children don’t always relax by being told to “sit quietly.”

They relax when we meet them where they are — through playful movement and simple routines that slowly help their nervous system settle.

This is also an important reminder for anyone teaching young children:

Behaviour management is not always about stopping movement. Sometimes, it is about giving movement the right direction.

When we understand how children learn at each age, our classes become more calm, connected and meaningful.

This is exactly what I love teaching inside our Kids Yoga & Mindfulness Teacher Training — how to make yoga age-appropriate, creative, practical and rooted in children’s real developmental needs.

If you work with children or want to bring yoga and mindfulness into their lives,

Here’s a little glimpse inside what we’ve been exploring together ✨

Energetic Kids in Yoga Class? 3 Things That Help

Energetic Kids in Yoga Class? 3 Things That Help Hi, If you have ever taught a children’s yoga class, school session or group activity, you may have experienced this. One child is full of energy. They may keep moving, leaving the mat, interrupting, rolling around, distracting others or needing your attention again and again. And very quickly, that one child can shift the energy of the whole class. As teachers, parents or caregivers, it is easy to feel frustrated in that moment. We may think:...

Hi, Over the past few weeks, through my kids yoga sessions, school wellness sessions and teacher training work, one thing has come up again and again: Children need these days practical tools to pause, breathe, focus and regulate. But these tools need to be taught in a way that children can actually connect with. Mindfulness is something we hear about so often now — and for good reason. In today’s overstimulated world, children are constantly taking in information, sounds, screens,...

Another question I often hear from people interested in Kids Yoga Teacher Training is: “Do I need to be a yoga teacher already to join?” The simple answer is — no, it is not mandatory. Learning to teach kids yoga requires more than knowing yoga poses, advanced asanas or breathing techniques. Of course, understanding yoga is important, and we cover the foundations in the training. But teaching children’s yoga is also about understanding children — how they learn, feel, respond, express and...
