Hi ! I love using storytelling in kids yoga because a pose becomes far more engaging when it is no longer just an instruction. Children have something to imagine, respond to and become part of. Here are three simple storytelling techniques I often use: 1.Give them a character Turn the pose into something children can become: 🐢 A turtle 🦋 A butterfly 🌳 A tree 🦁 A lion ⭐ A star 🚀 A rocket The character gives children an immediate visual idea and makes the movement easier to understand. 2.Give the character an action Now invite the character to do something: The butterfly can fly. The tree can grow. The lion can roar. The turtle can crawl. The rocket can blast off. When children have an action to follow, they become more physically and emotionally involved in the story. 3.Add a breath or feeling This is where the story becomes more meaningful. Try: 🌿 A brave lion breath 🌿 Calm butterfly wings 🌿 A strong tree in the wind 🌿 A sleepy turtle breath 🌿 A confident rocket launch Now children are not only moving. They are also connecting movement with breath, emotion and body awareness. A simple formula to remember is: Character + Action + Breath or Feeling = Storytelling Yoga These activities may look playful, but children are also practising: 🌿 Focus and listening 🌿 Body awareness 🌿 Coordination 🌿 Breath awareness 🌿 Confidence 🌿 Creativity and imagination 🌿 Emotional expression I shared these three ideas in my recent Instagram reel.(Link at the end of the post) Want to learn more creative & age-appropriate ways how to teach kids yoga from toddlers to teens- Inside our Kids Yoga & Mindfulness Teacher Training, you will learn many more creative ways on how to use storytelling, themes, games, props, music, yoga cards, breathing and mindfulness tools for different age groups. Hi Reader, When I first started teaching Kids Yoga, I thought a good class meant children were following along, staying on their mats and doing what I had planned. Over time, I realised that some of my biggest learning came from the things I gradually stopped doing. 1. I stopped expecting stillness immediately Children may come into class excited, tired, distracted or full of energy. Instead of expecting them to suddenly sit still and focus, I learnt to meet the energy first — often through...
Hi Reader, If you love yoga and enjoy working with children, you may wonder: Do I really need a Kids Yoga Teacher Training? For me, the answer is yes — because teaching children is very different from teaching adults. It’s not just about simplifying yoga poses or making the class fun. You need to understand: How to help children focus How to connect with them so they feel ready to participate How children learn at different ages How to keep them engaged without over-instructing How to use...
Understanding Energy & the Science Behind the Play Hi Reader, Over the past few weeks, I’ve been sharing how I use play, movement, props and imagination to keep children engaged in yoga. But behind the fun, there’s something equally important: Learning to read the energy of the child — and the class. If you already teach Kids Yoga, or are thinking about it, teaching isn’t simply about planning fun poses, breathing exercises, games and movement. Before choosing an activity, I often ask: What...
