🐸 When Fun Activities Turn Chaotic in Yoga

Hi!

Last week in one of my kids yoga classes, we were doing Frog Pose. The children were hopping, laughing, and having a wonderful time.

Within seconds, the room became louder, the energy got bigger, and some children started jumping around excitedly.

For a moment, it looked like the class was heading towards chaos.

As teachers, parents, and educators, many of us have experienced this.

A fun activity suddenly becomes "too much."

The natural response is often:

"Everyone calm down."

"Sit still."

"Let's do relaxation."

But over the years of teaching yoga and mindfulness to children, I've learned something important.

The problem is often not the activity. The problem is the missing transition.

Children cannot always move directly from excitement to stillness. Their nervous systems often need support getting there.

Instead of:

❌ Fun Activity β†’ Relaxation

Try:

βœ… Fun Activity β†’ Transition Activity β†’ Calm Activity

For example:

🐸 Frog Jumps

⬇️

❄️ Rolling on the back

⬇️

🐸 Freeze in Frog Pose

⬇️

🌬️ Breathing to calm

⬇️

🧘 Relaxation

I call this:

✨ Move β†’ Slow β†’ Calm

This simple shift can make a huge difference to behaviour, focus, and participation. Behaviour management is often not about stopping energy.

It's about guiding energy. And sometimes the most effective behaviour strategy isn't a consequence, reminder, or correction.

It's a better transition. That's one of the ways teaching yoga and mindfulness to children differs from teaching adults.

Beyond teaching poses and creating fun experiences, we also need to understand children's development, behaviour, and regulation so we can support them effectively.

These child psychology and behaviour management principles are some of the topics we explore inside our Kids Yoga & Mindfulness Teacher Training Certification. This is exactly what I love teachingβ€”how to make yoga age-appropriate, creative, practical, and rooted in child development, blending yoga, mindfulness, and emotional well-being to support children from ages 3–18.

If you work with children, are a parent, educator, yoga teacher, or simply want to bring yoga and mindfulness into children's lives, here's a little glimpse into what we've been exploring together. ✨

Energetic Kids in Yoga Class? 3 Things That Help

Energetic Kids in Yoga Class? 3 Things That Help Hi, If you have ever taught a children’s yoga class, school session or group activity, you may have experienced this. One child is full of energy. They may keep moving, leaving the mat, interrupting, rolling around, distracting others or needing your attention again and again. And very quickly, that one child can shift the energy of the whole class. As teachers, parents or caregivers, it is easy to feel frustrated in that moment. We may think:...

Hi, Over the past few weeks, through my kids yoga sessions, school wellness sessions and teacher training work, one thing has come up again and again: Children need these days practical tools to pause, breathe, focus and regulate. But these tools need to be taught in a way that children can actually connect with. Mindfulness is something we hear about so often now β€” and for good reason. In today’s overstimulated world, children are constantly taking in information, sounds, screens,...

Another question I often hear from people interested in Kids Yoga Teacher Training is: β€œDo I need to be a yoga teacher already to join?” The simple answer is β€” no, it is not mandatory. Learning to teach kids yoga requires more than knowing yoga poses, advanced asanas or breathing techniques. Of course, understanding yoga is important, and we cover the foundations in the training. But teaching children’s yoga is also about understanding children β€” how they learn, feel, respond, express and...
