When I first started teaching yoga and mindfulness to children, I already knew yoga.I understood movement. But very quickly, I realised something important: Knowing yoga is not the same as knowing how to teach children. A child who is restless may not need another instruction. A child who is quiet may not necessarily be calm. A 4-year-old will not learn the same way as a 12-year-old. And sometimes, before asking a child to focus, breathe or follow a pose, we first need to ask: Are they regulated? Do they feel connected? Are they ready to engage? Over the years, these are some of the principles that have shaped the way I teach: 1.Your own calm matters first. 2.Children are not mini adults. 3.Regulation comes before instruction. 4.Connection comes before correction. 5.Different ages need different approaches. 6.There is no one-size-fits-all method. And perhaps one of the most important: 7.Behaviour communicates something. Instead of only asking, “How do I stop this behaviour?” These are some of the foundations we explore deeply inside our Kids Yoga & Mindfulness Teacher Training. Not simply what activity to teach — but why, when and how to teach it to the child in front of you. If this resonates with you and you’d like to explore how to bring these principles into your own teaching, take a look at our upcoming Kids Yoga & Mindfulness Teacher Training in Singapore.
