What I Wish I Knew Before Teaching Yoga to Children?

When I first started teaching children, I already knew yoga as a teacher for adults

I knew the poses.
I knew breathing practices.
I knew how to sequence a class.

But very quickly, I realised something:

Knowing yoga and knowing how to teach children are two very different things.

Children don’t always follow instructions the way adults do.

  • A 4-year-old may need imagination and movement before stillness.
  • A 7-year-old may need structure, play and simple rules.
  • A tween may need challenge, choice and space to express themselves.
  • And sometimes, before we teach anything at all, we first need to help a child feel settled, connected and ready to participate.

That changed the way I taught.

I stopped thinking only about what yoga practice should I teach? and started thinking more about:

  • How old are they, and what is developmentally appropriate for that age?
  • How do I bring their attention and focus into the class?
  • How can I help them regulate and feel connected first?
  • How are they feeling today?
  • What will help them engage? How to read their energy ?
  • What do they need before stillness?
  • How do I manage the group without taking away the joy of the class?

Over the years, this became a big part of what I now teach in our 95-Hour Kids Yoga & Mindfulness Teacher Training.

It’s not just about learning yoga poses for children. It’s about learning how to teach children from ages 2–18 in ways that are engaging, age-appropriate and meaningful — including:

  • age-wise class planning
  • behaviour and group management
  • breathing & mindfulness
  • creativity and engagement
  • regulation and emotional awareness
  • practical teaching strategies you can actually use
  • Teaching yoga & mindfulness as lifelong tool of wellness

And most importantly, how do I stay regulated and connected to my own calm so I can support the children in front of me?

If you’ve been considering working with children — whether you’re a yoga teacher, educator, parent, therapist or completely new to teaching yoga — this is exactly the gap the training is designed to bridge.

Hello BlissYogaSG Community! 💜 As part of our BlissYogaSG community, I love sharing practical tips and insights to support children's focus, confidence and holistic well-being through yoga, mindfulness and purposeful play. One thing I've learnt from nearly a decade of working with children is that before we can teach, we need to engage. Whether we're teaching yoga, mindfulness or any other activity, if children aren't engaged and attentive, meaningful learning becomes much harder. Focus isn't...
